Clothes around the world

In many countries, traditional clothes are still worn. People sometimes were certain clothes because of their religious beliefs. For example some Muslim women always keep their faces covered.


In Japan, many women wear beautiful, embroidered gowns called kimonos. The gowns have deep sleeves and are tied at the waist with a wide sash called an obi. Indian women wear graceful saris. A sari is a length of cloth that is draped carefully around the body, and then drawn over the head or shoulders. Some Indian and Pakistani women wear trousers, often of silk, with a tunic on top. In many parts of India, men wear a simple garment called a dhoti.
In Lapland, where the temperature is usually below freezing, the people wear thick brightly-colored clothes made from wool and reindeer skins.
